What has caused a sudden drop in water pressure (both hot and cold) throughout my entire house?
We have a well, but no water softener hooked up. Copper pipes, house built in the 70’s…no leaks that I can see anywhere in the house. Both hot and cold are affected, every faucet and spout. It happened slowly over the course of 15 minutes (while I was in the shower, of course), going from normal to trickle. It is barely dripping now. Everything was fine yesterday. Please help…I have two kids and little money to spend on a plumber coming out to try to figure it out on his /her time. Dishes and laundry pile up fast…
Wow, everyone is so helpful….
Just went down to the pump; it sounds normal and in on. On a whim, on the way back inside, I checked the outside faucet on the side of the house. It is working fine! Is this a water filter problem maybe? I thought I just changed it…but maybe not…

check your power connection to it.

Do you have a pressure gauge on your water tank from the pump? Did you check the well to make sure the water level is still up? Sounds like the pump may be weak. If you have a gauge it should be between 45-70 psi.

If you have a well I am assuming you have a pump… sounds like something clod up the pump. If you do have a pump try hitting it with a hammer softly. If that doesn’t help I guess you will have to get a plumber.

There are a few different possibilities. IT could be something with the well pump. Check to see if it’s running or sounds different than it is supposed to.
Depending on where the pump is located, there could also be a leak between the pump and the house. I am assuming that the plumbing from the pump to the house is underground. You may want to check to see if the ground in that area seems to be saturated.
Those are the only two things I can think of off the top of my head. Try calling a reputable plumber to at least do a check to see if it is an easy fix.

is the well actually coming on, has it lost electricity? if there is power to the well then the other thing is maybe you bladder int the tank has ruptured and its water logged. If this is the case you have to turn the poer to the well off and drain the tank and restart, then buy a new tank as soon as possible because it will continue to be water logged.
well you know more now than you did before so let us know if you solve the problem.

did you have a drop in pressure, or in volume?
they are not the same thing you know.
a drop in volume would indicate a blockage between the pump and the house.
a drop in pressure would indicate pump problems and or the pickup tube is blocked.
could be a broken pipe, but your pump would be running constantly and you’d see water everywhere.

well first go check the pump, and make sure it’s running. if not check the power source, there may be a reset button on the pump. try shutting off the breaker to the pump then turn it back on. hope this helps.

Sorry for your dilemma. If there is an inline filter, maybe change it. Otherwise I’m afraid a plumber is probably called for. It could be the pump has quit working. If pump is running, then it may be a break in the supply line. I would suspect the well pump.

Could be the pump , internally, or a leak . Had that happen . It was a hole in the fitting, where the water line goes to the pump. The fitting is cast iron ,(on that pump) so corrodes eventually. Yours? Have to look at it . Most require a special tool to get it out . In my case there are a couple of brothers here ,that do that work . His ( one that did it) experience allowed him to get the job done for less than I could, if I rented the tool , bought the parts retail, & did it myself .

You could call the water company to have them check the water pressure supply to your house. This is a free service they provide. If they find no problem you may have a defective (worn out) water regulator, normally found near the water heater. They cost around $50-$60 available at Lowes and Home depot.
