Both Goldfish Died, is it my fault?
I turned the pump off overnight and we came down and the fish were dead. I have turned it off before probably 7 times and they were fine. My wife is blaming me for the dead fish and I want to make sure it was my fault before I take the heat and also ensure it doesnt happen again.
2 fish, 1 pump, filter doesnt seem to work very well. water changed 4 days ago and is cloudy again
now dead fish, any suggestions would help thanks

Umm why did u turn off the pump? That is the oxygen for the tank if you have a bad filter? Gold fish are dirty fish you need to get a better filter and leave the pump on. You can also use chemcials that will clear up the water. The more water changes you do SOMETIMES means that you are losing the natural cycle of that tank.
Sorry about your fish now get some replacement parts and you should not have that problem again. Also if you do water changes do them every 2 weeks or so.

As fish get older and larger they consume more oxygen, therefore when you were shutting the pump off before they did’t use all the oxygen.
Just a guess, I am not a fish guru

Fish die a lot – not the same ones over and over, but….you know what I mean. Water from the tap is not good for them. They even suggest using the same brand of bottled water each time you change the water, so that they fish can get used to the Ph. However, a little water conditioner (from the pet store) can do a great job and should take care of the cloudiness. I think this is more of a marriage question than anything. Just say you can’t be sure what killed them but that you are sorry they are dead and will do research before trying again.

Sounds like it, although I couldn’t say for sure. I will say, the best thing to do is **** it up and take the blame

By turning off the pump, the oxygen levels in the water would have reduced and the nitrite levels would have risen. The fishy equivalent of drowning. Not a nice death and definitely your fault!
My advice, don’t get any more fish.

cloudy water could be a sign of over-feeding too. fish only need about 3-4 flakes each per day. i would also get a water tester or take it to a fish store and see if they can check your water levels, you may have too much ammonia in the water

Gold Fish are very dirty fish. They produce alot of waste and waste turns into ammonia. This is probably what killed your fish. How big is the tank? Most goldfish need very large tanks due to the waste they produce. Cloudy water could be due to a bacteria bloom. Did you change all of the water or just 25-50%? If you did a complete water change this could explain the cloudiness of the tank. And also the death of your fish. They could have died from stress.

Why would you turn off the pump, i keep everything running 24/7 with my fish tank, and my fish don’t die because of that, so from now on just keep everything running at once.

Have you cleaned out the filter? If its not working well its clogged and time to clean it. You should never turn your filter off. They most likely died of hydrogen sulfide poisoning due to anarobic bacteria caused from low oxygen caused by turning the filter off all the time. Yes it was you. Men should listen to women more.

so many issues — the cloudy water could be from overfeeding — are they eating everything? given they are goldfish they are probably eating everything so the problem is most likely too frequent water changes and a bacteria bloom thriving on fresh water.
2 goldfish need about 20 gallons. unless you are an expert hobbiest you might want to go with other fish if your aquarium is smaller. overcrowded goldfish = dead goldfish. they are playing a game of survival of the fittest in a tank of toxins if you overcrowd them.
goldfish are “fat bodied” and eat a lot and produce a lot of waste so they need more water to make up for it. they also **** a lot of oxygen out of the water. if you see them gasping at the top its usually for a reason — the water is oxygen depleated.

Not entirely your fault-given the complete lack of knowledge about these beautiful & intelligent creatures displayed by your average pet store employee coupled with the bewildering array of urban myths, folklore, dis-information & general ignorance peddled on the internet it’s hardly surprising tragedies like this are commonplace but you really should have done some research BEFORE taking on the responsibility.
The first link below gives a good overview of the needs of Goldfish & the best place to get sound advice about all aspects of the hobby is either one of the many forums, several good ones listed below, or if you’re lucky enough to have a specialist aquarium store nearby they should help you too. I’m sorry about your loss, if you decide to get more Goldfish I hope you have more success.
