Vented or Non Vented Boiler – which one should I choose?

Rebecca H asked:
I’ve got a meeting with my plumber on Monday and he wants me to choose either a vented or non vented boiler as we need to replace the boiler in our property when we have it renovated.
What is the difference between the two and what are the advantages of each? What do I need to take into consideration?

Vented.
Are you talking about either a gas boiler (vented) or an electric boiler (no vent required)?
I’ve never heard of a non-vented gas boiler.
Vented is the way to go. But I wounder if he means natural vent, or direct vent. I don’t know of any non vented boilers. if that is the case and you have a chimney available I would use it, theirs less that can go wrong with them. Direct vents a fine to. If their is a non vented boiler I would not use it.
I assume he is talking about direct venting, running a vent through an outside wall.
and natural venting. using the chiminy thats there.
Most of the time direct vent furnaces are more efficient then natural draft.
but direct vent furnaces have more parts that can fail in the winter.
i too have never heard of a non vented boiler but there are non vented heaters out there…we in canada have banned them as we don’t like to die from carbon monoxide poisoning(hint hint)
if you are talking natural draft vs. direct vent then go direct vent as they are more efficient (you can get condensing d/v boilers that are over 90% eff as nat draft will be less than 80%) if you are talking going electric then you may run into wiring/panel/house service upgrade issues if your house is older.
