Question about the water that flows to my shower/tub?
We had a leaky toilet. My husband repaired it and the floor. He did a great job. But when he was done he went in to take a shower and noticed that the shower only allowed hot water to come out. No cold or even warm water. It has been this way for a month. neither of us know what is wrong and keep adjusting the hot water on the water tank so that we can take a shower.
I called many plumbers and because we live out in the county this will cost us around $200, maybe even more.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?
Here is a description on the nozzles in the shower.
It is a single handle that turns both the hot and cold water on. To the right it is cold and as you move it to the left it warms up.
There is not a name brand on the handle. And we are having a hard time taking it apart. My husband suggested that we need to tear out the wall behind the shower. I do not want to do this and it seems like a simple thing to fix…but don’t know how.
Help, please?
Ok, i did not explain this right. Sorry. The water doesn’t even turn on until the handle is all the way to the left. And then only hot water. No cold water at all. I take 20 minute showers and the water stay hot until the water heater starts to run out.
I will try to take it apart though…
And I called many plumbers…the price that I gave is an average price for where I live. So, it is important for us to try and fix it ourselves.
Thank you for your help. ![]()
Oh..what does it mean when you say that the cold water side is “blacked”?

I would go with the the plumber, or get another quote, before I started tearing out walls, unless your husband knows what he’s doing. It sounds to me like the faucet needs to be adjusted. This is fairly simple, just remove the ***** in the middle of the handle and it will slide off. There’s a plastic adjustment behind the wall plate. Was it like this before he worked on the toilet?
Go to the hardware store and either get a new faucet or at least a repair kit. It could be the cold side is blacked, but your not describing that, you’re saying that no mater where the handle is you get hot water. Unless your husband cut some piping and plugged up the cold water line, then connected the hat water to both sides of the faucet; the only cause to your problem are internal to the faucet or the cold water pipe is hot. I have the latter problem since the piping runs through the attic; the pipes get hot and it takes a while for the cold water to get to the faucet.
Try to rebuild the shower valve you can pick up a kit from Lowes or Home Depot if this doesn’t help then try turning the toilet water valve off, then remove the shower head and turn on the cold water, if you have cold water the problem could have been that when your husband fixed the toilet and turned off the water supply an amount of calcium that had built up in the valve transfered to the cold water side of the Shower faucet if you still have no cold I would remove the shower escusion plate (the plate where the handle is located) behind the plate there are two small water valves that can be controlled by a flat head ***** driver if calcium has flowed from the toilet supply valve and lodged into the cold side of the shower faucet which should be on the right side. try using a flat head very gently to close this valve the calcium that may be lodged inside the valve will be crushed allowing the water to flow again Please do not use much force on this valve as it made to turn easily once the initial turn is made. Open the valve again turn the water on allow the water to flush out any hard calcium. Install shower head again and don’t forget to turn on the supply valve for the toilet
does the shower have a valve that is off,a large piece of calcium is probable behind the valve seat, common when pipes are worked on.
